Runners of the Year

Boys

**Daniel Bernal*** (Eastwood)

As if this was unexpected. Danny has been the city's top runner all year long. Going undefeated again in not just local meets, but also in Arizona and at Southlake Carroll. Danny had great performances at Regionals (3rd) and at State (3rd). The race at NXN South was crazy awesome incredible with a 5 runner sprint to the finish! Then running in Portland in Nationals Danny finished 10th as All-American status. What a senior season!

Joe "the knife" Messer (Eastwood "86) and XC historian has summed up the cumilation of Danny's XC high school running:

#2 all time EP time Mae Simmons 14:41.7;

#4 all time Mae Simmons

2 X qualifier at Nike Cross Nationals

#2 top finisher in a National race (10th at NXN 2016) by an EP runner

The best part of his running history is how he continues to look out for his teammates and gives them and all the other runners in EP credit for helping him get to the level of running he has attained. He is already #3 all time EP boys in the 3200 for track. Let's see what happens by the end of his high school running by May.

Girls

***Anisa Burciaga*** (Canutillo)

Anisa is the embodiment of a long distance runner. Never giving up and always improving, steady as she goes and just kept plugging away and chopping off time every step of the way. Her perseverance is evident in her development since she was a sophomore and her first trip to State. Anisa was a super soph and was able to take her early experience at a State meet and keep plugging away to make her final season at Canutillo one to remember, as well as make recruiters take notice. Both Texas Milesplit and TxRunning have her as a Top 20 Statewide recruit.

Anisa was undefeated in local races and the momentum of an incredible senior year began when she headed west to Casa Blanca Arizona for the Desert Twilight Invitational. Running this meet for the first time Anisa was able to go head to head with some serious competition from Arizona and New Mexico. She capped off her initiation to a BIG TIME meet with a Top 20 finish and a PR of 18:36. She followed that up with finishes consisting of the District 2-5A Champion, 3rd place at Regionals, Top 10 at State (10th) with another PR of 18:16. Anisa capped off her high school XC running with yet another PR of 18:15, Top 20 and 3rd Team NXN South with a 19th place finish. Anisa was also selected as Third Team XC by Tx Milesplit.

Anisa made it to State in the 1600 last year for Canutillo so, like Danny, Track season should be just as fun to watch.
